You can get to the island by regular ferry - In stark contrast to that of of hedonistic Cancun, the Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) is a fairly laid-back, simple and comfortable island where you can go to relax and take part in a wide variety of water activities. The feel here is tranquil, rustic and very easy-going. Visitors to this Island are likely to find an experience involving some water based adventure or just totally relaxing on the Island's soft white beaches next to the deep turquoise Caribbean waters.

The Isla Mujeres is a top destination for honeymooners and couples who want to spend quality time together. Families tend to day-trip from the mainland as a week or two permanently on the island may prove a bit too remote and quiet.

Day-trippers from nearby Cancun arrive on ferries during the day, which makes the island a hive of commercial activity as they meander around the town, shopping, dining and haggling with vendors.

The beaches are busiest during the peak daytime hours as they too, filling up with the day-trippers but when the ferries leave, the island quietens down again returning to its natural serene and tranquil state. If you're looking for a romantic getaway - a place to relax, dive, snorkel, swim and enjoy some wonderful sight-seeing or simply unwind on pristine white sand beaches.

Playa Norte - North Beach - is probably the best and is the most popular on the Isla Mujeres. Although it can become a little crowded the clean white sand and clear blue waters set the perfect scene for sunbathing, swimming and relaxing.

You can snorkel on the Isla Mujeres. Playa Garrafon, Manchones Reef and Bahia Mujeres (Women's Bay) are where you'll be treated to a festival of brilliantly colored tropical fish.

Many people come to the Isla Mujeres to swim with the Dolphins! A company called Dolphin Discovery, run an aqua center that offers you the opportunity to swim with captive, trained dolphins in specially adapted enclosures. You'll be shown a safety and educational video and given some instruction with the trainer in the dolphin enclosures. For an extra charge you get to experience 15 minutes of free swimming time with these endearing creatures.

There is a National Marine Centre that houses a captive breeding programme for turtles and close by a local entrepreneur has a captive nurse shark that you can swim with!

Touring the Isla Mujeres - a popular way to get around the small island is by golf buggy: they are clean and quiet and a very effective way of getting around. Not expensive to rent they make an ideal, low impact, vehicle to explore and get around the island during your visit.

As an alternative to a golf buggy, you could rent a moped or bike to get around.
