Cancun and Mexico's deep sea fishing is well known the world over by experienced fishermen who come here regularly. Deep sea fishing is just one type of sports fishing you can enjoy in Cancun. For people who don't want to go out on a boat there is always surf fishing and even fly fishing as viable alternatives. Just cast into the surf from the beach and see what you can catch. This is an especially fruitful early in the mornings.

We would say for the most fun, take a specialist charter boat and go out to sea with an experienced local crew to find your fish! There are plenty of operators in Cancun set up to deliver the best of sports fishing experiences. It doesn't matter if you know what you are doing or someone brand new to it all - there's someone in Cancun who can help you enjoy the thrills and excitement of your off-shore fishing trip.

Fishing trips usually begin early in the morning depending on the tide and weather and will last anything from early afternoon to early evening. Good fishing charter companies have boats that have been specially adapted for sports fishing, come fully equipped with a trained, knowledgeable and licensed crew, the right gear, and all the necessary tackle for the kind of fishing you plan to do.

Only one line per person is allowed in the water at any one time from the boat and there are regulations about how many rods and reels per person may be taken onboard. There are catch limits on how many fish can be kept but there is no limit on catch and release.

Tips for planning a successful fishing trip in Mexico: We always take sea sickness tablets no matter what - It's no use spoiling your day out on the water by feeing queasy. We back the tablets up with Ginger nut biscuits - which we find keep the collywobbles away!

Book your trip well in advance - especially during the high season. Sports fishing in Mexico is really popular and if you travel all the way to Cancun in high season without having made a reservation, you will probably be disappointed. All the best boats and crews sell out ahead of time.

What is included on board - We have found that when you make a reservation, to be sure and understand what is and is not included in the price is prudent. A day's fishing trip package should include the boat, licensed crew and captain, fishing bait & tackle, food (for all day trip), soft drinks, water and probably local beers. It is customary to give tips to the crew (even if you have a bad day)!

Don't forget to take your camera! Some species of fish are released back into the wild under a catch and release scheme, but you never know when you're going to catch a personal best or just a big one!

A day out on a boat will use a lot of your energy and you'll be exposed to the sun, wind and waves and it's important to be prepared. Wear a hat and be sure you can cover up including a high factor sun block. A lip balm may also be useful. Stay well hydrated at all times by drinking plenty of water but moderate your alcohol intake.
