El Rey: Mayan culture within the environs of Cancun.

Dated to the 3rd and 2nd century The El Rey site has two main plazas as well as two main streets when almost all of other Mayan sites only have one. BC, the little advertised, recently upgraded archeological site is quiet, peaceful and surprisingly free of visitors. El Rey is definitely an impressive site but not on the size scale of Tulum or Chichen-Itza. The Mayan pyramid of El Rey is topped by a platform,believed to The Mayan pyramid of El Reyhave been used as an observatory and inside its vault there are clearly wall paintings on stucco. The site is thought to have been occupied originally by Mayan fishing families and later used as a royal burial ground Originally named Kin Ich Ahau Bonil, Maya for "king of the solar countenance". The site was named El Rey in the 20th century in honor of the Maya sculpture discovered there. This significant archaeological find - now in el Museo de Arqueologia - depicting a human face and adorned in the dress of a high ranking Mayan or king. There is some evidence that El Rey was also linked to astronomical practices in the ancient Maya culture.

The entrance fee was under 30 pesos (US$3) in 2004 and it was open from 8 AM until 7 PM everyday. But make sure of opening times before you visit as the archeological department seemed to have a bit of a manning problem when we were there - It took three visits for us to find the site open!
