Mexican States - Quintana Roo

Quintana Roo was named using the two last names of Andrés Quintana Roo, a hero from the War of Independence.

Quintana Roo is a state of Mexico, on the eastern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. It borders the Mexican states of Yucatán to the north and Campeche to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and has a southern border with the nation of Belize.

The capital city of Quintana Roo is Chetumal. Quintana Roo also contains the popular resort city of Cancun with the nearby islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, the towns of Bacalar, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Juarez, Akumal, and Puerto Morelos, as well as the ancient Maya ruins of Chacchoben, Chakanbakan, Chamax, Coba, Dzibanche, El Meco, Ichpaatan, Kohunlich, Muyil, Oxtankah, Tancah, Tulum, Tupak, Xel-Ha, and Xcaret. The Sian Ka'an national park is also in Quintana Roo.

The state covers an area of just over 50,000 sq km, and a reported population of over 874,000. The statewide population in Quintana Roo is currently expanding at a rapid rate due to the construction of tourist hotels and the consequential demand for workers in the service industries. Many of the immigrants to Quintana Roo come from Yucatan, Campeche, Tabasco, and Veracruz.

The state of Quintana Roo, despite its international status as a tourist resort area, is often hit by severe hurricanes - this is mainly due to its exposed location - this closes the resort areas down once or twice a year, so best booking outside the hurricane season!
