Sonora derives from the ópata word xunuta, that means "In the place of the corn". A legend exists on the matter that refers that an indigenous group that lived near the town of Huépac it used corn leaves to cover the walls and ceilings of the huts in which they lived. Another version attributes to the origin of the word to the ópata tribe, who lived in the margins of the Sonora River, to those who was known them like sonants.
