Dolphin Discovery - Isla Mujeres – Captive dolphins in large tidal enclosures that permit close contact with these fascinating marine mamals.

Many people come to the Isla Mujeres just to swim with the dolphins! A company called Dolphin Discovery, run a slick marine center that offers you the opportunity to swim with captive, trained dolphins in specially adapted tidal enclosures. You'll be shown a safety and educational video and given some instruction with the trainer in the dolphin enclosures.

The dolphins seem happy enough to be carring out their duties - but beware that they can 'accidentally' bump into you or flick you with a flipper or tail, which hurts!- i can assure you. These trained dolphins will give you a 'foot push', jump over a bar and give you a 'kiss' to order.

We were dissapointed to find that no personal waterproofed or underwater cameras are permitted on your swim - "As these may damage the dolphins"!

The session (optional) photos are taken by resident cameramen - photographs were US$16 each (2004) - Which we thought were a little expensive. There is a screening of an optional video after your swim, available at US$49! Photography is permitted by non swimming members of your party. We just took photos of another group after our swim to show what we did.

There is a 30 min pre-swim instruction in a "classroom" followed by a 30 min swim with the Dolphins. For an extra charge you get to experience 15 minutes of free swimming time with these endearing creatures.

Pregnant women are not permitted to swim with the dolphins. You can rent a locker to put your clothes and valuables in.

You have to take your own swimwear and towel. We recommend that you take a spare T-shirt, sun screen lotion, camera and plenty of cash!
